4-20mA signal to powered ethernet converter

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83822I

Hi Folks,

Is it possible to produce a board that has a 4-20mA input to Ethernet converter preferably with the ethernet connection being powered which powers the board?. Not sure if this is feasible or not or if anyone has a reference design for this.

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

Cheers,

Craig

  • Hi Craig,

Do you mean a Power Over Ethernet application where the power to the board is supplied via Ethernet cable (Cat5e)? We have such example application using our 10/100Mbps Ethernet PHY, DP83822I. More information about the POE design can be obtained here: www.ti.com/.../TIDA-01463

  • Hi Aniruddha,

Thanks for your post, much appreciated.

Yes this is type of power over ethernet i would be looking for but how would i bring a 4-20mA signal into the board so it can travel on the data lines in the ethernet cable?,  i am looking to take a flow measurement from a flow meter ( this being the 4-20mA signal) into the board then through the ethernet Cat cable into a switch where they can read the flow rate.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Kind Regards,

    Craig
