DP83867CR: Layout Guidelines for MDI Interface

Hi Team,

Do we have any layout guidelines for the MDI interface on the DP83867CR? There are layout guidelines for the RGMII interface, keeping trace lengths less than 6 inches – but is there something similar for the MDI side? What is the max recommended distance from the RJ-45 connector to the DP83867 PHY?

    Hi Mitchell,

    There is not max recommended trace length on the MDI. Longer traces will result in higher loss and can impact cable reach. I would recommend that the trace length from the PHY to the RJ-45 connector be less than 3 inches. However, longer traces would also work depending on what is the acceptable cable reach for a system. The traces should be deferentially coupled with 100ohm differential impedance. The traces should also have a solid return path.
