SN65DP159: Cascade of 2x DP159 to implement DP retimer

Part Number: SN65DP159

Dear all,

one of my AA, has to implement a DP retimer. Due to the lenght of the cables the idea is cascading 2x DP159.

Below the chain

FPGA -> DP159 ->DP159 -> Monitor Display Port.

Is the DP159 the rihgt part for this job ? If not can you suggest any alternative p/n ?

Hello Domenyko,

What is the output of the FPGA? DP++ or AC-coupled TMDS? How long are the cables?

Is this a DP to DP retimer application or DP++ to TMDS retimer application?

Hi JMMN,

below the answers to your questions:

The output of the FPGA is DP++

The signal travels along 3 different boards, 20cm each. at the end there is a 3m cable. (this is the reason for a cascade of 2x DP159)

The application is a DP to DP Retimer application

Hi Domenyko,

The DP159 is designed as a standalone DP++ to TMDS retimer / redriver. DP159 does have a DP to DP retimer mode but it requires an FPGA running code to operate, is that feasible for both DP159s in the system?

do you mean that before each DP159 there should be an FPGA ?

Hi Domenico,

There does not need to be an FPGA in the DP path, but there needs to be an FPGA to control both the DP159s over I2C.

do you mean the SDA/SCL_CTL, pin or the AUX pin configured as I2C ?
do you have any example?

For use as a DP to DP retimer, the DP159 must be controlled via SDA_CTL and SCL_CTL lines. See this app note for more information:
