I have a few questions about the differences between an MST HUB and a USB HUB. I am creating a dock block diagram for us to use here in the field. It's similar to that of the Mini-Dock (TIDA-01243) and the Type-C Dock (TIDA-00630), but will have more peripherals and update it with current devices. I have a good understanding of everything that goes into a docking system except for the USB HUB's/MST HUBs. I know the devices that are needed at either end of the dock at the DP sink and source end, but not sure how the signal processing in between needs to be handled.
1. My first question is when would you use an MST HUB over a USB HUB? I know that MST HUBs are designed for alternate modes such as DP, but can a USB HUB such as the TUSB8044 handle DP as well?
2. In the example of the Mini-Dock, the HD3SS460 is connected to both a USB HUB (TUSB8041) and MST HUB (STDP4320). In this example are the DP lines only connected to the MST HUB, thus making the TUSB8041 incapable of alternate modes?
If you know of any documentation/training material that would help clarify the use of a USB HUB and MST HUB that would be greatly appreciated as well.
