TCAN1042-Q1: Versus TJA1042

Part Number: TCAN1042-Q1

Dear, Sir.

My customer is evalating TCAN1042-Q1 now. They have an experience to apply

NXP/TJA1042, so asking a question comapring that. Please give your advice.

1. TCAN1042-Q1 has VIO or NC pin (#5). Does it mean this pin is originally connected

to the internal circuit & supply Volatge of IO such as 3.3V when the voltage traslation

is needed? Sorry I would like to double-confirm.

 2. TJA1042 has SPLIT pin, but TCAN1042-Q1 doesn't have.

Is it possible to provide the testing data of Bit Eror Rate using TCAN1042-Q1?

Best Regards,

H. Sakai

  • Sakai-san,

You are correct, the VIO pin is a supply pin. Applying a voltage from 2.8-5.2V will set the IO logic levels of the device to the applied voltage level.

The split pin is present in older TI CAN transceivers, but has been removed in the TCAN series. This is mainly because the split pin is meant to stabilize the common-mode level of the bus, and help mitigate EM emissions coming from the switching noise. The TCAN1042 has been designed to not need this, and has shown to have emission levels lower than competition without the split pin being present.

I'll have to get back to you on the bit error rate, is there a specific condition you'd like to check under? Typically this is caused by external factors, not just the transceiver itself.

    Eric Hackett

  • Dear, Eric-san.

Thank you so much for your reply & mentioning.

Last time, I focused the Bit Error Rate. After that, I tried to check deeply, then found

TCAN1042-Q1 passed IBEE Zwickau (Immunity & Emission).

I suppose the big advantage of TCAN1042-Q1 is to be able to eliminate CMC.

I am hoping IBEE Zwickau (Immunity & Emission) test results instead of BER.

  • Sakai-san,

I will send an email with the information shortly, and will close this thread.
