THVD1450: diagnostics

Part Number: THVD1450
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD96

Hi Sir

Does TI have RS485 or reference design could support diagnostic function

This application can know which RS485 transceiver is abnormal

Thanks

  • Hi Kai,

Unfortunately, I don't know of a solution like this available. It is an interesting idea, though. What kinds of fault conditions would you want the diagnostics to detect?

One method for checking for short-circuit conditions (e.g., due to a damaged transceiver or a cabling fault) would be to place a small resistance in series with the RS-485 signal lines and sense the voltage across it using a differential amplifier. The amplifier output can then be compared to a threshold level so that any currents above the normal operating currents would trigger fault indication.

Another method would be to use a "loss of signal" detection circuit in parallel with the RS-485 transceiver. This way, a fault like a disconnected cable or a damaged transmitter could be detected. The SN65HVD96 can be used for this, since it provides a high-level logic output when its differential input is below 500 mV.
