SN65HVD3088E: TIDA-01171 AC Coupled RS-485 - best termination topologies

Part Number: SN65HVD3088E
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-01171, THVD1550, THVD1510, TIDA-00527

Customer is interested in running an AC Coupled RS-485 link and has reviewed TIDA-01171 to get started. We now have some specific questions related to termination topologies:

1) What is best suited for EFT, common mode noise, etc.?

2) What additional detailed information do we have on AC-coupled systems?

Thank you.

  • Kurt,

Does the customer plan to do point to point communication? What's the communication distance and data rate? Is the supply 5V? For good EFT, common mode noise protection, you can consider THVD1550 or THVD1510. The AC coupled system can be tricky in terms of DC bias and cutoff frequency. This reference design use edge to trigger and recover the bit. TIDA-00527 transmits the signal over AC capacitor but needs the signal be DC balanced. Please let me know if you get more specific questions.

  • Kurt,

Sorry I missed the termination part in last reply. In general we recommend to terminate for each node in AC coupled system. The reason is that the resistors build DC level of the signal. But if the application is not point to point, the total resistor load needs to be taken into account for a proper termination. Hope it makes sense to you. Please let me know if you have more questions.
