TPS65988: need Power Delivery for two USB-C in a USB HUB. Don't understand how to control MUX for USB 3.1 data lines.

Part Number: TPS65988
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB542

Hello,

as stated on thread title, I need to design a 4-port USB 3.1 HUB with Power Delivery on 2 ports (source max 60W on each). I don't need Alternate Mode so for sure this TPS65988 is overkill for my application. Anyway I got attracted by its ability to contract two power delivery negotiations in one package. Being just a chip, it allows me to realize smaller PCB. Also, for this application, a TUSB8041A seems to fit my needs.

Now the hardest part is to integrate those components in my design. It seems I have everything sorted unless for MUXs. Reading its datasheet (figure 39  page 50), it seems TPS65988 is able to control MUXs (for example, would a TUSB542 be a good pick?) by its GPIOs. I am not able to understand how. Is it possible to configure this PD controller for this application with strap pins? Or do I have to look at TPS65987DDH and TPS65988DH Host Interface Technical Reference Manual and configure this controller with and FTDI adapter through I2C?

If not possible, would a TPS65981 better suits my need?

Best regards,
Alessandro
