LMH1983: Jitter behavior in Free-run mode

Part Number: LMH1983

Hi,

I am working on a video decoder project. To ensure decoder clock synchronization with encoder clock , we are doing  clock correction by changing register 0X18 and 0X19  of LMH1983 based on  PCR value  (program clock reference )  from the encoded stream.

our observation is that the clock jitter goes too high momentarily when we reduce the lmh1983 clock frequency (reduce the  0x19 register values), surprising fact is that the jitter behavior is same even when we keep the register 0X18 constant (msb 2 bits) and only reduce the 0x19 register value by 1.

Is there any way to avoid this condition by setting any of the other configuration registers. keeping in mind that we have to use lmh1983 always in freerun mode. only control allowed is through reg0x18 and 0x19 and these register values are changed once in a minute or two.

Expecting earliest response since we are already behind our schedule.

Regards,

Arjun

  • Hello Arjun,

What is the VCXO you are using? Do you have a datasheet?

Have you confirmed the elevated jitter is related to the LMH1983 output voltage? If you drive the Vtune of the VCXO using an external source at the same voltage, do you see an elevated jitter?

What are the exact values you've programmed that you have acceptable jitter vs. not acceptable jitter? What is the integration range you are using?

How are you measuring the jitter?

Do you have an ability to measure the phase noise of your clock at different offsets in the integration range you are using for jitter?

Do you have any filtering between the LMH1983 and Vtune input?
