TPS65983B: Self-powerd Thunderbolt device using TPS65983B

Part Number: TPS65983B

Hi,

Is there a way to start a fresh project without loading any existing project templates (Add-in card, Apex, Bus-powered, Tahini or Tapex)? Currently We are looking a way to configure TPS65983B to work in a Thunderbolt device that has ~12Vdc internal supply, but no FETs to control input/output charging. In practice, the device would not source / provide energy towards host, neither it would consume/sink from it. Bus-powered device template would be the easiest, since we could make the negotiation where 5Vdc would be provided, even though not consumed. Apex/Tapex/Tahini are all adding either additional TPS65983B chip or FET controls due to mandatory charging option..

  • Hi Janne,

No, the TPS65983B is only supported in these thunderbolt reference designs and will not work for other applications.

  • Ok,

If following Tapex creek reference design, is it possible to leave out external FETs when only PP_5V and internal switches are used, even though FW-config tool still shows the external switch timing options? Does it matter what timing option is selected? SENSEP/SENSEN (B10 & A10) are shorted and connected to VBUS. HV_GATE1 / HV_GATE2 are left floating.

  • Hi Janne,

We do not support making any changes to the reference designs. This would lead to Intel TBT certifications failures. Please follow the reference design as is.
