Bidirectional LVDS transceiver

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMH0397

Hi,
I am designing a point to point LVDS topology which will be used to transfer data at around 400 Mbps.
The cable length would be around 2-3 meters and I am planning to use SMA connectors and cables with 50 Ohm impedance.
There are 8 channels (bidi) of data path and hence there will be 16 SMA connectors (SMA connectors are customer's requirement and we can't change it another high density connector), which is making the board size an issue.

Hence, I am planning to use a bidirectional LVDS (TIA/EIA-644) buffer which would have both pre-emphasis and equalizer along with direction control so that I can use the same physical path for both Rx and Tx by enabling the command for direction.

As I was browsing through the catalog, I found some buffers with pre-emphasis and equalizer function but these were not bidirectional.

Is there any product that I can use for my application? Can any of you point me to any such content which could be helpful for me?

Thanks!
Mandan

  • Hi Madan,

I am not aware of a bi-directional LVDS with the functionality as you noted. Having said this, we have a device that can operate at 400Mbps and higher data rate. Further, data transmission direction can be controlled through the pin. However, this device is targeted for single-ended 75-ohm media operation. Device part number is: LMH0397. You can find this part on TI.COM. Also, I would appreciate if you could please let us know about your application.

  • Dear Nasser,

Thanks for your inputs. Since this particular product is intended for video application and hence 75 Ohm termination, I'd not use this.

The application is for point to point data transfer over 3 meter SMA cables between 2 FPGAs (Kintex-7).
