DP83848I: Connection of DP83848i

Dear Sirs,

My customer asked us about connection of DP83848i.

He wants to know the connection propriety to the backplane at a later stage of the slave side PHY.

We have received a request from customers to connect on the backplane without using a pulse transformer.
He wants to connect the master and the slave with a backplane instead of connecting them with a cable.
The connection is as shown below.

Please tell me whether it is possible for your request, and if possible, how to do it.

Hi Hasebe-san,

It is recommended to keep the transformer on the same PCB as the PHY. The backplane connections will have more loss than a cable, so the cable reach will be reduced, but it is possible to do the configuration shown.

We do not have recommendations on how to layout the backplane, but it should follow other high speed bus suggestions.

Transformers must be arranged and it is recommended to place them on the same board.
Is my recognition recognized properly?

My customers want to connect without a transformer.

There is Transformerless' s Appllication Note on TLK 110.

Can DP83848i make connection method like this App.Note?

Hi Hasebe-san,

You do not need the transformers and the capacitors to connect 2 DP83848s on backplane only.

Yes, the DP83848 can be used in transformerless applications. Please see the transformerless app note specific to the DP83848: www.ti.com/.../snla088
