EV2400 Issue

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: EV2400, MSP430F5529, BQSTUDIO

We have an issue on few of our EV2400 purchased a year ago which was not used. We purchased 9 of them, 5 of them works fine without any issue.

4 of them have issues.

Here’s the issues we encountered:

  1. With the EV2400 connected, power up the PC. Run the BQ Studio or BQ EV Software, it cannot detect the EV2400.
  2. Remove/re-Insert USB cable to EV2400, Run BQ Studio or BQ EV Software, it works.

Another Scenario using Devcon:

  1. With the EV2400 connected, power up the PC. Run DEVCON.EXE (to initialize or reset the USB port for EV2400)
  2. Running the BQ Studio or BQ EV Software, it cannot detect the EV2400.
  3. Remove/re-Insert USB cable to EV2400, Run BQ Studio or BQ EV Software, it works.

Another Scenario using Reset button:

  1. With the EV2400 connected, power up the PC. Running the BQ Studio or BQ EV Software, it cannot detect the EV2400.
  2. Press Reset Button of EV2400, Run BQ Studio or BQ EV Software, it works.

We tried the 5 EV2400 that’s working, it works constantly without issue.

  • Hi Nhizanth,

When BQ Studio detects the EV2400, can you tell me which firmware version it shows in the Dashboard on the left side of the window? Is it the same firmware version for all of the units?

    Thanks,
    Matt
  • Hi Matt,
Thank you for the response. I tried V05 and V18 and V20, same results. The good ones works with different firmware versions (V05,V18, V20)

    Thanks

    Hi Matt,
Also, we emailed TI employee regarding this issue. So, they shipped us other four new EV2400. But still we have the same issue on all new EV2400. Can you help this out?

    Thanks
    Nhizanth

  • Hi Nhizanth,

Can you check one more thing for me? If you remove the 2 screws on the EV2400 case, you can read the Revision # of the MSP430 chip (U1) on the board. Can you let me know what the Rev is for the units that show the issue? It would also be good to know what the revision is for the passing devices.

I am wondering if there is an errata for the MSP430F5529 that might explain the behavior you observed: www.ti.com/.../slaz314z.pdf

    Thanks,
    Matt
  • Hi Matt,

I checked MSP430 chip Rev # of all EV2400s which have issue,  two of them with Rev I and other two with Rev K.

And the new EV2400 with the same issue have mixed Rev# either Rev I or Rev  K.

    Thanks

    Nhizanth

  • Thanks Nhizanth. Then I think that is probably not the issue. I expect the units that are not showing the issue will also be Rev I or Rev K.

Have you repeated this issue on multiple PCs? It seems like a USB driver issue. Normally, I would recommend updating each unit with the latest version of the firmware, but there doesn't seem to be a correlation in your case.
  • Hi Matt,

Every EV2400 with issue have updated to latest firmware version (V20) and also USB drives are up-to date. Even I tried using bad EV2400 on PC which is already working fine with good EV2400, still same issue. Good EV2400 works well with every PC we have.

    Thanks

    Nhizanth

  • Hi Nhizanth,

I talked with a colleague about this and he suggested the following:
    - Make sure you are using the most recent version of bqStudio (v1.3.86.3 is the latest one available on ti.com right now). Make sure you run the installer as Administrator.
    - Now that you have the latest firmware installed on each device, remove the driver (or drivers) from Device Manager and allow the drivers to reinstall when the EV2400 is detected.

Can you see if this helps?
    Matt
  • Hi Matt,

As you said, I have tried updating BQstudio (v1.3.86.3) and removed drivers from Device Manager too. Unfortunately remains with same issue.

    Thanks

    Nhizanth

  • Hi Nhizanth,

We have someone checking into this issue from the MSP430 team. I hope to hear back from them soon to see if they have further recommendations for debug.

I hope to get back to you by Wednesday this week. Thanks for your patience on this.
    Matt
  • Hi Matt,

Thank you for your time. Will wait for your reply

    Thank

  • Hi Nhizanth,

The MSP430 team has been helping us dig into the issue. One thing they asked is if you can try checking whether the device is getting enumerated in Device Manager. When you power on the PC with the EV2400 attached, are you able to see the device's VID/PID under the Human Interface Devices category?

I think it would be good if we can get one of the EV2400 devices showing the issue since we have someone from the MSP430 team who is willing to help debug the problem. If that is okay, I will send you a private message with my shipping address.

    Matt
  • Hi Matt,
Yes, I can see the device's VID/PID under the Human Interface Devices category. But when we Run DEVCON.EXE , it doesn't initializes back.
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, we spoke to one of your TI employee, Swaminathan Ramanathan, about this EV2400 issue. Please provide me your official email ID and shipping address, I can CC you with my company's email thread with Swaminathan and, I can ship you all four EV2400 to debug the problem. This is my offcial email ID Nhizanth.Raghavan@eberspaecher.com

    Thanks
    Nhizanth

  • Thanks Nhizanth. I sent you an email. I'll close this thread for now and post an update here once we resolve the issue.

I appreciate all of the info you've provided to help us debug the problem you are seeing,
    Matt
