TPS65982: Plug detection issue in DFP mode

Hello,

I have TypeC Enabler (rev A) board connected to a monitor from TypeC side and to a laptop from DP side. This work well after power-up. But after Type-C cable replug, TPS65982 failed to detect cable connection. Switching to DRP role and back recover controller until next cable re-plug. As I see, in this state TPS65982 is in power sink role for strange reason and it does not pull CC lines up.

Could you help me to resolve the issue?

Hi Alex,

If you need the TPS65982 to prefer the Source Role, you should enable "Initiate Swap to Source" in your project file under Control Configuration. I noticed it was disabled. This would make the TPS65982 do a power role swap to source if it comes up as a sink.

Hi Eric,

I see that "Initiate Swap to Source" setting makes PD controller to send PR_Swap command to get Power Source role. But first, PDC have to detect cable plug.

That's correct, we would only send the PR Swap once we have come up as a sink after cable plug detection.

Hi Alexander,

Please check your BUSPOWERZ configuration to ensure you have it set correctly. Also, Please ensure that the RPD pins are connected to the CC pins like in the TPS65982EVM schematic.
Nothing special should be needed to detect a cable plug. If you continue to see issues, please see if you can reproduce on the TPS65982EVM.

Hi Eric,

On TIs TypeC Enabler board I have tried three combination of switches 7 and 8 of SW3. This means BUSPOWERZ pulled down, pulled to 3.3V and pulled 1.8V. Issue happens in all three cases.

On TIs TypeC Enabler board RPD pins are connected to CC pins (via zero ohm resistors). Not sure what EVM do you mean, but if you mean EVM by link http://www.ti.com/tool/tps65982-evm, then RPD pins connection match to that schematic.

Unfortunately I have no TPS65982EVM, only TypeC Enabler board.

I am sorry, but I am not clear how crosspoint switch affects to Type-C device detection... This is PD controller issue.

Hi Alexander,

This issue you are reporting cannot be seen on the TPS65982EVM. It is only being reported on the "Type-C enabler board" which was developed by a different team. The EVM you are using is the TUSB1046EVM, hence my suggestion to ask a question with that part number so that team can support the question.

Hi Eric,

I borrowed the EVM board (http://www.ti.com/tool/TPS65982-EVM), downloaded firmware attached to first post and reproduced the same issue. So, it is not "Type-C enabler board" specific.

Alex,

Please load the default EVM firmware onto your device. This is not seen with the default firmware. I am suspecting the issue is with the firmware changes you have made.

Hi Eric,

I have played with default Firmware. I reproduce issue in following way:
- In Application Customization Tool press Project->New Project->TPS65982->Advanced->None->Downsteam Facing Port (DFP) Only;
- Go to Common Setting -> System Configuration and check 'Sense Disconnect on CC when Sink' checkbox;
- Go to Command Settings -> Control Configuration and check 'Process Swap to Sink' checkbox;
- Generate Firmware and upload it into the FLASH on EVM board;
- Power cycle EVM board;
- Enter to debug mode;
- Go to Device 1, port 0 -> Debug Registers -> Status;
- Connect monitor, Plug present field shows 'Plug Present, ..." ;
- Replug Type-C cable, Plug present field still shows 'No plug present'.

Alexander,

In this case, both the monitor and the TPS65982 are trying to become the DFP, I would suggest using a DRP template on the TPS65982 to avoid these connection issues. Keep in mind that this would change the behavior of Type-C negotiation (not DP mode) since you can only be a DFP in displayport. This negotiation is separate.

Hi Eric,

In my observation, both the monitor and TPS65982 are trying to become UFP. Both do not provide pull up resistors in that strange state. If I pull any CC line up to +5V with external resistor, TPS65982 reports via register 0x69 that 1.5A power is advertised on appropriate CC line (or default or 3.0A depend on resistance value).

That is the issue, PD controller is set up to be DFP, but it unexpectedly plays UFP role.

Alex,

The TPS65982 will not try to become the UFP if you are using a DFP template. Please ensure you do not have Try.SNK set in the Type-C Options.

Hi Eric,

I am agree that TPS65982 should not try become the UFP.
TPS65982 have no Try.SNK setting (AFAIR, TPS65987/8 has it).

I have found workaround for the issue. On disconnect event it is enough to set System Configuration.Port Info to 'Disable', then return back to 'Present Rp on CC ...'. After this action TPS65982 detects monitor on next plug.
