TMDS181: Two questions about TMDS181

Part Number: TMDS181

Hi Team,

I have two questions about TMDS181. Please give me an answer. Thank you!

Q1:My understanding of Retimer mode and Redriver mode is as follows. Is it correct?
TMDS181 mainly has EQ module, CDR module (PLL), Driver module.
Retimer mode contains all the functions.
Redriver mode skips CDR module, only EQ and Driver module, and the performance of EQ and Driver is exactly the same as that of Retimer mode.
CDR functions only make sense at high speeds (jitter and skew will have a greater impact on transmission at high speeds), so the chip will recommend setting in Crossover mode.
According to the function description of register 0Ah 1:0 in the data manual, I can forcibly switch to Retimer or Redriver mode through I2C. But this is not recommended.

Q2:According to the description of Redriver Mode in the data manual, in Redriver mode, the device only compensates for the loss of ISI. Is ISI compensation also available in Retimer mode? Which module is used to implement this function?

  • A1: You can set the device to all redriver mode or all retimer mode, but retimer performance is better at 1080P or greater resolutions. Also, if the TMDS181 is put in I2C mode, tx-term_ctl must be set by I2C, it does not automatically configure based on resolution.

A2: Yes, the EQ addresses ISI - see section8.3.6 of the datasheet.
