TPS65988: USB-C Physical Security

Part Number: TPS65988

I am interested in using USB-C on my next project but had a security question. Do any of the USB-C devices have any type of built in security on the physical layer to help prevent unwanted access. We want to use the USB-C as a potential wired connection method for debugging/reading data , but are concerned about unauthorized users being able to access the data.

I know that there is the option to have vendor defined messaging for USB-C but from what I understand this would be a software implementation. Is there any security options or features built into or hardware to help prevent from unauthorized access?

  • Hi Paul,

Currently, there are no security features built into the hardware. It would be recommended to implement a user alternate mode through VDMs. This way they will know when they connect to their own device and can enable their hardware accordingly.

    Thank you,
    Eric
