TPS65986: What is the difference between the TPS65986, TPS65987, TPS65982 and the TPS65983B?

Part Number: TPS65986

In searching the TI web sight - the TPS65986 web page says that this device is NRND and points to the TPS65987 as the replacement. Well, this is all fine & good except that the package is completely different (BGA Vs. QFN). I also check the TRM between the two - and it appears that there are significant differences between them.

In trying to keep with the same BGA package - I noticed that the TPS65982 and TPS65983B have the same 96-ball BGA package as the '86 and are pin compatible with each other, and... that the TRM for the '82 is the same document as the '86 (There is no TRM that I could fine on the TI web site for the '83B) and the '86 pin-out is a sub-set of the '82 & '83B. (some features of the '82 & '83B are missing from the '86 - which is OK, as opposed to the other way around). Like there is a 2nd I2C port on the '82 & '83B.

Questions: Can you outline the differences between these ICs? (I have the pin-out differences - I'd like to know the Register set differences/TRM differences and functionality differences. Is there an updated TIDA-01243 that uses the TPS65982 or TPS65983B in place of the '86?

Thanks!

  • Hello Mark,

The TPS65983B is only for use with Intel Thunderbolt reference designs and is constrained to meet the requirements of those designs.

An important difference in the TPS65987D is support for two 5V to 20V, 5A bidirectional switches to VBUS compared to one 5V, 3A switch to VBUS
and one 5V to 20V, 3A bidirectional switch.

The TPS65987D has 3 I2C ports with support for native I2C master and slave modes. The TPS65982 has 3 I2C ports with support only for firmware emulated master mode only on port 3.

Both TPS65987D and TPS65982 support an external power path, PP_EXT. TPS65986 does not.

Note that the TPS65982 and TPS65986 share a common Firmware Application-Customization tool.

    TPS65987D adds support for PD3.0.

Also note some differences in pinout between TPS65982 and TPS65986 because TPS65986 lacks certain features found TPS65982.

There are no updates to the TIDA-01243 to substitute for the TPS65986.

I am including links to documents related to your question: the Host Interface Reference and Firmware User's Guide.

I hope this answers your questions.

    Best regards,
    Scott
