DP83869HM: RGMII > 100Mb optical > DP83869 > copper Ethernet

Part Number: DP83869HM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869, DP83867CS

I need to go from RGMII to optical 100Mb then on the other side to copper Etrhernet. This is a closed system, I can use any protocol and configure the chips any way needed.

The DP83869 looks like a good choice for this. I see two different ways to set this up:

Strap to RGMII > 100BASE-FX > fiber > 100BASE-FX > copper Etehrenet. The RGMII side looks like it can be done with just strapping. The closest strapping on the other side seems to be SGMII > Copper Ethernet. Can the SGMII be configured to 100BASE-FX?

Strap the RGMII side to RGMII > SGMII and turn off auto-negotiation and set speed to 100, then the next DP83869 strapped to SGMII > copper Ethernet and again turn off auto-negotiation, set speed to 100 ans setup MDI auto-negotiation to 100 only.

I would prefer the first one since I only need to program one of the DP83869s, but programming both is certainly fine if I have to.

Other quick question, when will distributors start carrying the part?

Thanks,

John S.

  • Hi,

DP83869 has dedicated Functional mode for both. Refer to Table 12 of Datasheet.

    1. RGMII to 100Base-FX for the first interface. Choose Operational Mode Strapping.
    2. 100Base-FX to Copper ( 100Base-TX) : This is defined as "100Base-T to 100Base-FX" Media Convertor Mode in datasheet. This again can be selected as HW strapping.

On distributors having the part, given the part is already released, it shall happen soon. Anyway you use ti.com to order samples for the initial board and testing.

  • I was talking with my client today and he would like to use the DP83867CS as the fiber to copper Ethernet side since it costs half the price of the DP83869, if possible. Can the DP83867CS be configured to read the above mode? I presume there is no strap mode that will do this so configuration would have to be done.

We will have to make the decision whether 2 DP83869s and no configuration circuit is cheaper than 1 DP83869, 1 DP83867CS and configuration circuitry.

    Thanks,

    John S.

  • Hi,

DP83867 supports only Copper ( RGMII to Cu). FIber interface is supported only on DP83869. For pricing you may want to reach out to your regional TI Sales.

  • Thanks, I'm routing up the board with DP83869, we shall see how it works.
