TPS65983B: TPS65983B configuration on the VIN_3V3 of the PD chip

Part Number: TPS65983B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982

Hi there,

At present, the customer has a project evaluation. The Thunderbolt design uses two external PD chips from Alpine Ridge DP. The two PD chips are connected to one Thunderbolt output. Currently, it is estimated to use TPS65983B (support PD3.0). Currently have the following questions to ask:

1. Can the TPS65983B meet the requirements of TBT certification when it is designed with Alpine Ridge DP for one to two (one alpine ridge out of two TBT ports)?

2. When designing the PD, I have a question here. The PD chip BUSPOWERZ is used to configure VBUS to the system channel (decharge) in the case of dead battery or NON-battery. Please ask this configuration on the VIN_3V3 of the PD chip. Is there still work in the case of electricity?

BR, Eason

  • Addtion:
The TBT interface I got here uses the design of the TPS65982 (as shown below). The power supply after the Type-C port VBUS passes through the back-to-back MOSFET is VCC_HV_SYS. If the design is based on the following, if it is in the dead battery scenario, The power-on process is as follows:

    1. Type-C port VBUS power-on---
    2. PD is powered by the internal LDO VCC3V3_TBTB_LDO---"
    3. Detect the configuration of BUSPOWERZ (when VCC_HV_SYS is not powered, BUSPOWERZ is low)---"
    4. Turn on the external Q4, Q5 to power the system ---"
    5. VCC_HV_SYS is high (at this time, VIN_3V3 is not powered due to timing problem)---"
    6. BUSPOWERZ is high (caused by the level shift circuit work),

Will this cause the external Q4 and Q5 to be turned off again, and VCC_HV_SYS will be powered down, so that the system will not be powered up (the system's power is completely provided by VCC_HV_SYS)?
  • 1. Yes, TPS65983B can pass TBT certification when 2 of them are connected to a single Alpine Ridge device - IF, the Intel reference design is followed.

    2. Please give more information, I do not understand your question. After you asking if the DP device works in a dead battery situation?
  • Eason,

Please ensure the customer is following an Intel TBT device reference design if they are using the TPS65983B. If not, the TPS65983B cannot be used for their application.

    Thank you,
    Eric
