TPS65983B: Support request for single-port, self-powered AR device with TPS65983B

Part Number: TPS65983B

Hi guys,

formalizing our request for the ongoing issue of supporting a 1-port, self-powered AR design with the TPS65983B.  To recap, Intel had requested a template for creating an image to support this on 12/16.  Our first choice is AR LP since our design targets that device.  Plan B is AR SP and Plan C is a 1-port AR DP (Apex Cr).  We'd like to ensure we get regular updates on status and hopefully an ETA we can work with for scheduling purposes.  Any updates appreciated, thanks,

- Chris

  • Hi Chris,

We have got your request and I am assigning this to relevant person. You'll get an update on your query within a day or two.

    Thanks,
    Rahul
  • Hi Chris,

You can use the Apex Creek / Static Charging / PortA since you will be using only a single port. Omit the settings for the Device 2 and you can still configure the source capabilities to your system requirements.

  • Thanks, Jacob. A few questions:
    1) I need to understand what version of the App Customization Tool to use and which firmware base image to use. When I use "windows_64bit_TPS65983_Thunderbolt_application_customization_4_08.exe" it selects image, "TPS65983A_fw4_0004_55_00.bin". That appears to be incorrect since we're using the B version, not A. Also, I believe the last FW version I installed is v6.53 not 4.55.
    2) For the device transmit source capabilities registers, how do I select the PP_5V switch source? The choices are "Internal 5 volt Power Path (PP_5V)(00b)" and "Internal 5 volt Power Path (PP_5V)(10b)" yet the TPS65983B only has a single source, not two. Which one?
    3) How do I "omit the settings for Device 2"? There appears to be no way to do that. The Device 2 tab is always present and it always has settings which can't be eliminated.

    Thanks,

    - Chris
  • 1) When "new project" is used, one of the questions if it is supports PD2 only or PD2/PD3. If the answer is PD2 only, 4.x firmware is used. If the answer is PD2/PD3, 6.x firmware is used. TPS65983A runs only the 4.x firmware. TPS65983B runs either 4.x or 6.x.

    2) Use "Internal 5 volt Power Path (PP_5V)(00b)" as in the default settings.

    3) You can't omit the settings for the second device. Just ignore them. They will still be there, but will not be used.
  • Thanks, Brad. Still unclear about 4.x vs 6.x. Would we be TB3 complaint with the older 4.x version? We're using the TPS65983B and sourcing 5V/3A max. Do we necessarily need to specify PD3? What are the pros/cons? Thanks.
  • Both 4.x and 6.x are Thunderbolt compatible. But, they support different version of the PD (power delivery) spec, 2.0 vs 3.0. Both PD version support the standard power contracts, alternate modes, etc. PD3.0 supports a few extra features. You will have to look at the PD specs to decide which version you will use. PD3.0 does require some extra hardware if Fast Role Swap is enabled. See the specs for details.
