TPS65986: USB C port doesn't power-up connected device

Part Number: TPS65986

Hi all,

We designed board using single TPS65986, which need to communicate with unpowered Mini PC, connected to USB C, and power it as well (20V, 3A).

Our board powered by the external Power Supply (barrel jack).

Problem is that USB-C port doesn't supply 20V to Mini PC.

Here is TPS65986 status:

Can you help me to fix it?

Regards

Isaac Brondz

  • Hi Isaac,
    1. Are you evaluating with TPS65986EVM or with your own board?
    2. Do you have PD communication logs between TPS65986 and Mini PC?
    3. Can you show me the Transmit Source Capabilities Register you used to configure the TPS65986 source PDOs with?
    4. What is your sink PDO configuration?
  • Hi Kedar,

See my answers below in green:

    1. Are you evaluating with TPS65986EVM or with your own board?  - I'm using my own board

    2. Do you have PD communication logs between TPS65986 and Mini PC? No, I haven't - Mini PC doesn't powered-up

    3. Can you show me the Transmit Source Capabilities Register you used to configure the TPS65986 source PDOs with?

    4. What is your sink PDO configuration? Our board is a source, so the  Number of sink PDOs - 0. Is it correct?

    Additional information:

Our board connected to the Mini PC straight, w/o cable. I measured voltage on both CC1 and CC2 - it is the same, 1.08V

Here is PD status screenshot - no CC Pull-up detected. Is it OK?:

our system suppose to output VBUS to the external system using the TPS65986.
we see negotiation (pulses of 3v) on CC1
CC2 from the USB connector is floating not connected on the PCB

when i connect my system to a miniPC i expect that my system will power-up the miniPC from the USB- this does not happened!
measuring VBUS show 0v, measuring the CC1 = 200mv and i see the pulses

can you help by sending me a file that i need to upload the device so that it will do the switching and will power up the MiniPC?
what do i need to configure the software so that it will work?

  • Hi Isaac,
Please send the project file you are using to configure your TPS65986. Currently is your issue only with regards to TPS65986 configured as a source and unable to power MiniPC as a sink, or are you having issues with Display Port as well? You can email me at k-manishankar@ti.com.
