SN55LVDS31-SP: Failure effect on LVDS input/outputs when supply exceeds absolute rating

Part Number: SN55LVDS31-SP
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN55LVDS32-SP

In our application the SN55LVDS31-SP and SN55LVDS32-SP are supplied with 3,3V. The absolute maximum rating is 4,0V.

Assuming a failure case were the supply exceeds the maxium rating (i.e 5,5V) what will be the failure effect on the LVDS inputs/outputs?

  • Mollet,

An informal experimental analysis was performed on the LVDS31 to help answer this question.

    Please see this report.

    SN55LVDS31-SP_VCC_Fault_Experiment.pdf

The LVDS32 uses same process, and it is expected that it would similarly not be subjected to immediate failure from exposure to VCC exceeding absolute max ratings.  It is not expected that catastrophic shorts to power or ground would occur to either inputs or outputs based on reasonably short duration faults on VCC.
