DP83869HM: Media converter without MCU

Part Number: DP83869HM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869

Hi,

According to the block diagram of the media converter below, there is no connection to the MAC/MCU.

Is it possible to use the DP83869HM PHY chip as media converter for 100 & 1000 Mbps without MCU?

Thanks

Best Regards,

Yash

  • Hi Yash,

DP83869HM supports managed media converter mode and needs a MAC connections. Section 9.4.7 Media Converter Mode of the datasheet contains information on what register settings are needed via the MAC. The block diagram will be updated in the next datasheet revision. Thank you for pointing it out.

  • Hi Aniruddha,

    Thanks for your answer.

According to user manual of evaluation board(snlu237.pdf), MDIO signals needs to be used for managed mode. Do we also need to connect RGMII signals between DP83869 and MCU for detecting the RJ45 speed mode and to change the speed of the fiber interface(100BASE-FX/1000BASE-FX)?

  • Reading the datasheet again, I think the DP83869HM does not require a MAC connection for Media Converter mode. Depending upon applications, Media Converters products may require a MAC.

Please provide a block diagram if a MAC connection is required for Media Converter mode .

Please also confirm that the DP83869HM can operate as an "Unmanaged" Media Converter mode using strap configuration discussed in Section 9.5.1 and associated Tables 9-18.

    Thank you
