TPS65987D: Questions about digital core

Part Number: TPS65987D

Team,

I have a customer examining TPS65987D with a few questions:

  1. What is running the digital core? An ARM processor?
  2. Can any of the GPIO be used as a wake up for the processor?
  3. Can we have our device present itself as only able to provide 5V out? So don’t support all the voltages up to 12V out?

  • Hi Carolus,

    1. It is an ARM core, however interaction with the device should focus around the Application Customization and Config Tool http://www.ti.com/tool/tps6598x-config

and the Host Interface: TPS65987DDH and TPS65988DH Host Interface Technical Reference Manual (Rev. B). This way we make sure that the tested and validated firmware remains in place.

    2. Wake from Sleep or Idle depends on certain Wake Events (Attach / Detach, PD, or I2C communication). GPIO events can be configured with the Customization Tool.

    3. Yes, the Customization tool allows complete control over the available PD Source and Sink contracted power levels.

I hope this answered your questions.

    Regards,

    Scott

  • Scott,

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the Application Customization and Config Tool and we have a better understanding on the limits of the configurability.  \

One requirement the customer has is that the system must detect a button press and then wakeup and display battery charge status. After reading all the documentation on this reference design, I’m failing to see how it would be possible to implement this requirement without adding an external MCU. If there is a way to satisfy this requirement, can you please share some supporting documentation on how we go about implementing it?

  • Hi Carolus,

I don't think I have enough system information to answer your question. My concern is linking PD controller operation or wake up and desired output. It might help to describe how you would like the system to be implemented and the PD controller's role in it.

    Regards,
    Scott
  • Hi Carolus,

I have not heard back from you in a little while. Please let me know if there are open issues or post a new question.

    Best regards,
    Scott
