DP83869HM: Media converter - Full duplex

Part Number: DP83869HM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869, , DP83869EVM

Hi,

We are planning to use the DP83869 PHY chip as a media converter chip.

Below are our hardware components and interfaces for full-duplex 100Mbps & 1Gbps ethernet communication:

RJ45(100BASE-TX/1000 BASE-T) <--> DP83869HM <--> MCU :RGMII <--> DP83869 : 100BASE-X/1000BASE-X <--> Optical transceiver module.

The Optical transceiver module has the following components:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Transmit channel :    TX_Differential_pair (from DP83869) --> Laser diode driver --> Laser Diode

Receive Channel :     RX_Differential_pair (from DP83869) <-- Limiting Amplifier <-- TIA with Photo Diode

Additional signals from Optical transceiver module : LOS, Disable, Fault

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My questions:

1. Can I use DP83869HM for the above application?

2. Can I use available evaluation kit from TI for the above purpose?

3. Which signals does the MCU need from the DP83869 to determine the speed of RJ45?

Regards,

Yash

  • Hello Yash,

You can definitely use DP83869HM as a media converter between copper ethernet and fiber ethernet. However, if you only need a media converter then you do not need 2 PHYs. A single DP83869HM can act as media converter. You can refer to the datasheet and the DP83869EVM for reference on how to configure DP83869HM as media converter. The MCU needs to be connected to the PHY via MDIO-MDC signal pins and not through the RGMII pins.
