TUSB422: why does the hardware not increment "RECEIVE_BYTE_COUNT"

I see plenty of messages from the source, and I even see the TUSB422 respond with a GoodCRC. However I never see the RECEIVE_BYTE_COUNT register increment, even when the RX_SOP_STATUS is set. Still the "hardware" does not update the RECEIVE_BYTE_COUNT register.

What could stop this?

I'm past that point, I"m currently trying to understand why it keeps showing repeating the CC_STATUS_CHANGED flag even after clearing it. It seems to clear, but quickly comes right back.
