TPS65983B: TPS65983B: Support request for Application Customization Tool v4.10

Part Number: TPS65983B

There appears to be a problem with the latest release of the App Tool, v4.10.  The option for "Neither" has been removed from the dialog, "Which port is used for >5V charging", under New Project/Apex Creek/PD2.  We do not support >5V charging.

Second, could you please point us to complete definitions of "Static Charging" and "Dynamic Charging"?

Our timeframe is IMMEDIATE since this is blocking release of our NVM.

  • Hi Chris,
Let me check into this and I will reply with an update tomorrow.

  • Hi Chris,

We are aware of the changes in the latest App Tool. For the present, the best way to use the updated firmware when you have an existing project may be to import project settings into the new tool.

Dynamic and static charging refer to source policy manager behavior. A dynamic charging policy allows available system power to be allocated dynamically between 2 or more source ports and counted against total system power. A static policy will have a per port power allocation.

  • Thanks, Scott.  I can't visualize how system (bus?) power is dynamically allocated between two source ports.  Are you saying a 2-port design could get away with sourcing only ~15W total (ie, 7.5W per port?) or 30W for a single port and none for the second?  Could you please clarify since I've scoured all the Intel and USB-C presos I could get my hands on and found nothing.  I've been selecting Static Charging...is that OK for TB3 cert?  What do most of your customers choose?  In my case I'm configuring 1-port and 2-port self-powered AR-based (Apex Cr) designs.  Is there a hard requirement or recommendation for Static vs Dynamic charging from Intel or Apple?

We're about to release NVMs (PD2) based on v4.59.  Are you aware of any imminent new releases or should we be OK for awhile (until submission) with 4.59?  Thanks,

    - Chris

  • Hi Chris,

This is related to Device Policy, ch 8 in the PD Spec rev 3.

You can see this a little in the difference between projects when you select Dynamic vs Static Charging. The static device has a set budget and designates one port as the high capacity port. That port has higher voltage (>5V) Source PDOs. The dynamic device gains a System Policy Manager tab under Device 1 in the Config Tool. It allows total system capability (power delivery) to be sourced / allocated on either Port 1 or Port 2 depending on the demand of attached sinks.

The '83B config tool is constrained to stay within the Intel TBT reference requirements. I will double check on the release plan for new firmware.

    Scott
  • Hi Chris,

I do not expect a new release soon.
