Dear all,

We have one application using TPS65988 for two ports application with Titan Ridge, now we combine the FW with thunderbolt, and using the external flash to startup, but when insert the power adaptor, only the adaptor send out the source capability, there is no other communication, seems PD can not work correctly.

Could you please give some methods to analyze this problem? (EC can not work now, since the power of EC is from DCDC which is not work now).

Hi John,

Please check your pin strapping on ADCIN1, it should be set to BP_NoWait if you expect the PD controller to boot from dead battery mode. I suspect it is set to something else.

Hi Eric,

ADCIN1 pin is connected with 10kohm upper resistor and 100kohm lower resistor to LDO_3V3, and SPI_MISO is pull with 2.2kohm to LDO_3V3.
Since it is with Titan Ridge, can customer just use our FW with thunderbolt FW not combined to test the PD controller?
Is there any method to check the patch load status?

Hi John,

Yes, however in that test the Titan Ridge will not behave correctly. The customer can read back the Mode register 0x3 to see if the device is in APP mode. Additionally, they can check the Boot Flags Register 0x2D to see if the device successfully loaded from the SPI Flash.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your reply, since the EC is not work now, can we read using other devices using I2C?
for 0x2D register, which bit shows the status of the load status?

Hi John,

From the TPS65987/88 Host Interface TRM: www.ti.com/.../slvubh2b.pdf
Bit 3 in 0x2D will tell you if the Spi Flash is detected.
Bit 10 in 0x2D will tell you if there is a patch loading error.

Hi Eric,

0x2D register is 0C18, bit3 and bit 10 are 1, it shows the patch loading error, could you please advice what the possible reason?
What information can be used for the analysis?

Hi John,

Do you have a TPS65988EVM available for testing? This way you can see if the issue is reproducible and also compare the customers hardware to the EVM hardware to help root cause the SPI Flash bootup failure you are seeing.

Hi Eric,

Unfortunately, I don't have EVM on hand, and this EVM can not be get free.
Do you think it is FW problem or hardware design problem mostly?
Besides, do you have intel reference design FW , the name is:
CRB：TR_DP_TI88_HOST_REF_DESIGN_R1V1

Hi John,

I think it may be a HW issue. I would suggest flashing a default TPS65988 image ont your board to see if you can get the PD controller to boot correctly.

You can answer the questions asked by the tool when selecting Project --> New Project. Once all the questions had been answered, the best fit template would be loaded automatically.
