TPS65981: TPS65981 and USB 2.0 mux/switch

Part Number: TPS65981

Hello,

I am building a USB type c connector based system but I cannot have the USB2.0 lanes go to the TPS65981.  I also will be using alternate modes with extending displays and having a high speed USB pair for additional perhiperals.

I am struggling to understand if  not having the TPS65981 USB 2.0 path has me giving up features of the device?  It looks like it is an analog mux.  I have the TPS65981EVM and I have 20V and the alternate modes working but was not sure if any USB2.0 data was exchanged in addition to CC,SBU.

Thanks for clarification,

Jason

  • Hi Jason,

You will be giving up the USB2.0 Mux feature of the TPS65981, the USB2.0 endpoint (billboard), and the BC1.2 detection. The datasheet has some more details on the use cases for these features. These may not be required for your design. In that case you can just route the USB2.0 lines around the TPS65981.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Eric,

Thank you for the prompt reply. The only feature that would be nice to have is the USB billboarding. From your understanding can that be on any USB 2.0 hub or does it have to come from the USB 2.0 data lines in the middle of the connector for type C? It looks like it is a device class and so there fore it should not matter which physical lanes of USB it is coming from, correct?

  • Hi Jason,

Billboarding does not have to come from the USB PD controller. In many systems, billboarding is handled by the USB hub instead.

    Thanks,
    Eric
