TPS65982: TPS65982 USB2.0 questions

Part Number: TPS65982

Dear all,

For TPS65982DC, if insert USB3.0 device, will the TPS65982DC integrated internal DP/DM switch switch to correct direction?

Besides, sometimes, when insert the USB2.0 device, the system can not recognize the device, what is the possible reason? will it related to the signal integrate problem? what should be check at this condition?

Thanks.

  • Dear all,

Could you please give me some feedback.
In our test, we found when inserting USB3.0 device, sometimes USB2.0 can not be recognized, could you please help confirm what is the possible reason and what should be checked?

    Thanks.
  • Hello John,

No there is no internal switch for the DP/DM lines. Some designs connect the corresponding lines together on the receptacle. Can you elaborate on what you mean that USB2.0 cannot be recognized? The BC1.2 charging cannot be detected? Or is it related to data?

  • Hi Adam,

In TPS65982, DP/DM mux is integrated in it, when insert the USB3.0 device, sometime it can be recognized by USb3.0 device, but when it is not recognized by USB3.0 device, it should be recognized by USB2.0 device, but some times it is not recognized even as USB2.0 device at some times.
What I mean is the data connection, not the BC1.2 recognition.
We don't know what should be checked when it is not recognized by USB2.0 device.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks.
  • Hello John,

Apologize for the late reply. USB2.0/3.0 connections and capabilities are advertised by the cable and device being connected. So for your example, if you are connecting a legacy device to the Type-C port, there is no real way for the TPS65982 or any of our other PD controllers to  determine if the device being connected is capable of supporting USB2.0/3.0. Sorry for the potential inconvenience.

Hope this was able to answer your question. If so, please click THIS RESOLVED MY ISSUE

  • Hi Adam,

Since for TPS65982DC, customer connect the DP/DM mux which is integrated in the PD controller, I want to confirm if the MUX is correctly switched, if is not switched correctly, then the USB2.0 device can not be recognized by the Host controller, is there any method to confirm?

    Thanks.

  • Hello John,

I'm not sure if I understand your question. If a non-PD USB2.0 device is connected to the Type-C port, the TPS65982 or any other PD controller will not be able to determine if the connected device is USB2.0 or USB3.0 capable. This is independent of the internal MUX.

The TPS65982 will determine a device has been connected based on the Rd of the connected device/cable but that is it.

Hope this better answers your question!
