TPS65988: Internal Power switch design in note book project

Hi Sir

I want to ask a experence question! I am working on a new project which might be 60W power needed.

Can I use internal power switch MOS to work 20V/3A power ? Would it make thermal issue on system or broken chip?

Do we have any test data or advice of this design?

The reason is that I want to replace CYPD5225(CCG5), and the cost need compare.

If we use internal power switch, then the total BOM cost will better then CYPD.

Hi Bruce,

Yes, the internal power paths in TPS65988 can be used for 20V/3A as either a source or a sink. The TPS65988 supports up to 20V/5A on each power path. We have some test information in the datasheet. Additionally, the following app note can be referenced to review the TPS65988 power path performance: www.ti.com/.../slva994.pdf

Thank you so much! Would it be any temp test data?
I just affraid of temp over 60 degree when it used in NB system inside.

Hi Bruce,

Figure 1 in the datasheet highlights how RDSon will change with ambient temperature. The temperature of the PD controller will be dependent on the PCB layout and casing design, as well as the ambient temperature.
