TPS65981EVM: TPS65981 doesn not respond to TPS6598x Application Customization Tool any more (Tool hangs when Flashing)

Part Number: TPS65981EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65981, TPS65987

Hi,

I operated a TPS65981EVM successfully and wanted to change the Firmware / Config using the Application Customization Tool. However the Flash process hanged and after rebooting the TPS65981, it seems not to respond any more to the Application Customization Tool. The "Re-Flash EVM Firmware" command in the Application Customization Tool also hangs.

Is there a way to recover the EVM firmware?

Best regards

Roland

  • Additional information: The TPS65981 is in BOOT mode, SPI Flash Erase seens to hang, however periodic SPI signals can be probed while SPI Flash Erase is in progress. It looks like the Flash Erase process does not complete and therefore the Flash Erase hangs.

    Any ideas?

    BR Rolland
  • Hi Rolland,

The TPS65981 should not interact with the SPI Flash during the Flash writing/erasing process. Can you confirm that you are using the latest version of the Application Customization tool? Also, do you have the dip switches on the FTDI for the SPI lines set to enabled?

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

    thanks for your reply.

I'm using Application Customization tool 4.03 which works for my other EVM (Power Duo with TPS65987).

The SPI Erase Process hangs, no matter what tool I use. I tried also the latest version on the TPS6598x Utilities GUI for programming. The same effect: The tool hangs doing the erase and the tool needs to be killed hard.

I've ordered new SPI Flash chips and will try to exchange the SPI flash. I assume that the Application Customization tool can also program new chips.

By the way, I have also posted a question with the Power Duo EVM with TPS65987 a couple of days ago. Could you please also have a look at this?

    Thanks

      Roland

  • Hi Roland,

There could be an error with the SPI Flash. It would be a good test to replace it. Yes, the FTDI and App Customization Tool can also program empty SPI Flash chips. That shouldn't be a problem.
I can't seem to find your other thread on Power Duo EVM. Can you please share a link to it?

    Thanks,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

here is the link to my Power Duo EVM problem:

Note: The desribed problem does not show up using the TPS65981 EVM. I tested both eCables and normal USB Type C cables.

  • Thanks, Roland. I have reached out to Adam about this thread. We will get back to you on that thread asap.
  • Thanks Eric for contacting Adam.

In the meanwhile I replaced the SPI EEPROM on the TPS65981 EVM. However the TPS6598x Utilities GUI hangs while erasing the SPI flash. The TPS65981 access using I2C still works and results in TPS65981 mode BOOT.

Any further ideas what could be wrong?

    Regards
    Roland
  • Hi Roland,

Can you confirm that the switches on your FTDI are configured as below?

    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

    thanks.

Just a couple of minutes ago, I managed to erase and program the SPI Flash of the EVM using an older version of the Application Customization Tool (3.x). The installation also reinstalled the FTDI drivers, so I suppose this could have been the problem, however this is speculation because the I2C worked always, but not the SPI part.

Best regards & thanks for your support!
