TPS25810: Current limit value

Hi,

Customer need to support 0.9A and 3A current advertisement for their application with corresponding current limit.  Now we find in the current limit is 1.7A(typ) under STD current advertisement which is much higher than 0.9A requested by the customer.  May I know why we define such higher value for STD mode, and how can customer have a current limit around 0.9A with our products?

  • Hello Antony,

    The TPS25810 will advertise 500mA and 900mA for each STD mode, but the current limit is set to 1.7A. Below is the CC CAPABILITY BROADCAST table shown for both the TPS25810 and TPS25820. The table for the 25820 shows the STD advertisements for each of the two STD modes.

    Thanks for your comments.  But, my customer expect the current limit is around 0.9A when we advertise 0.9A to the type-c device.  Now we have a current limit around 1.7A which is far from our advertisement @ 0.9A.  Do you know why do we have such design?  And how can customer achieve their purpose using our chip?

  • Unfortunately, many legacy / STD USB devices did not do a sufficient job of enforcing their maximum current limit draw so there are large number of devices in the ecosystem that may draw more significantly more than the STD current while in STD mode. At the time of developing the device, a decision was made to not have a current limit for the STD mode setting. This allowed for many of these devices in the marketplace to continue to work well with Type-C to Type-A cables.
