TPS65988: TPS65988 FW with ICL and TGL

Dear all,

If we use TPS65988 with ICL or TGL platform with thunderbolt function, there is TBT retimer outside, for the FW of TPS65988 and thunderbolt, here are below questions need your help:

1） Can the FW of TPS65988 and thunderbolt merger together and put in the external flash?

2) IF can merger, what tools can be used to merge?

3) if not, where the FW of PD and thunderbolt respectively and how it works?

Hi John,

1. 988 and tbt controller FW can be merged using the imaginarium tool. I don't think intel allows to merge the retimer FW with the PD controller. I would suggest asking Intel this question.

2. Typically, Intel uses Imaginarium tool for this.

3. The EC can hold the patch for the 988. The TBT Retimer has its own Flash that is owned by Intel. The 988 can control the TBT retimer through I2C3 which is an I2C master on 988.

Thanks for your reply.
For TPS65988, is external flash required to put the FW of PD controller, also for the TBT retimer, can it share the same flash with TPS65988?
Also for the TBT FW, where it should be put?
I heard some competitors can save the external flash for PD controller, can TPS659888 save the external flash in this case?

Hi John,

The TPS65988 can use either an external SPI Flash chip for the FW Patch + Configuration or it can receive the FW patch + Configuration from the EC. The TBT retimer cannot share the SPI Flash chip with TPS65988. The TPS65988 would either need its own SPI Flash chip or receive the FW Patch + Configuration from the EC.

What do you receive the FW patch+configuration from EC? is it put in EC?
How about the TBT FW, is it merged together with PD FW and put in EC?

John,

TPS65988 cannot share FW with ICL or TBT retimer. Please ask Intel for support for those items. For the TPS65988 FW, you could use either an external SPI Flash chip, OR you could use the EC to load the FW onto the TPS65988 during bootup.
