Hello team,

When ESD224 is damaged and reaches in the failure mode, which is the failure mode of this device, short or open?

And also, in the failure mode, do you think there is a possibility that TMDS signals still go through the ESD224 and reach at the link-partner as degraded waveform?

Hello,
Mostly the device will fail short until it finally opens back up. If it fails the signal will not be seen at the output

Hi Cameron-san,

Actually the customer can see the degraded signals on the link-partner via ESD224 after -10kV discharge testing. Is that normal behavior of ESD224 in failure mode?

Hi Cameron-san,

The customer was using ESD224EVM for this testing. We are checking with the customer about the waveform if removed the EVM.

I believe the down stream device might be getting damaged not the ESD224.
The ESD224EVM is a dongle that can be removed and you can test the HDMI system by itself. Can you send me a picture of the setup?

Hi Cameron-san,

Thank you for your advice, but the customer was using signal generator for HDMI downstream so the degraded waveform they observed at output of ESD224EVM was really from ESD224.

If we can prepare to provide the waveform and picture of the setup, I will send them to you.

Hi Cameron-san,

The customer would like to evaluate also ESD204 by same measurement as ESD224EVM, but it seems the ESD204EVM has only HDMI receptacle connector. Do you think ESD204EVM is not suitable to evaluate with using both HDMI plug/receptacle connectors as below connection? If yes, do you have any proposals?

Jun,
The ESD224 and ESD204 are two different devices. The ESD224EVM does not have flow through routing so there is no way to use the ESD204 of that EVM. Conversely you cannot use the ESD224 on the ESD204EVM because there is flow through routing on that EVM and that is not how the ESD224 works.
