DP83869HM: Media converter mode for copper to fiber

Part Number: DP83869HM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869

Hi Sir

May I know

1. Could DP83869 support media converter mode by H/W setting? (without any S/W config)

2. if setting 1000Mbps media converter mode on DP83869 ,can this mode be used with 100Mbps (downgrade to use)?

3. if need to use config media converter by S/W ,can DP83869 work with EEPROM?

  • Hi Kai,

DP83869 needs software access to work in media convertor mode. The software setting is mentioned in the datasheet. Also the speed needs to be same on both the copper and the fiber side. The Copper side can auto-negotiate down between 1000M and 100M but the fiber ethernet standard does not support auto-negotiation. So the Fiber speed would need to be changed by software between 1000M and 100M.
The registers on the PHY can only be accessed through SMI (MDIO-MDC pins). We have not tested a implementation where PHY is used with a EEPROM but if the register settings are done via MDIO-MDC pins then I don't think there should be any issue.
