maximum speed of operation of PCA9306

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCA9406

Hi Team,

May I know the maximum speed at which PCA9306DCTR can operate.

I am using this chip to convert voltage levels of I2C lines from 3.3V to 1.8V.

The I2c lines are coming from XMC4700 Relax Kit.This is an infineon board(https://www.infineon.com/dgdl/Infineon-Board_User_Manual_XMC4700_XMC4800_Relax_Kit_Series-UM-v01_02-EN.pdf?fileId=5546d46250cc1fdf01513f8e052d07fc)

  • Hey Hari-san,

There is a graph (figure 3) in the datasheet which shows the cut off frequency for this device. It appears that the -3dB point is around 250MHz.

For I2C though, you will be operating using an open drain architecture so you will not hit any where near this frequency. This device was meant mainly for 400kHz operation in I2C systems but you could potentially get up to 1MHz for I2C if your I2C bus isn't too capacitive.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Bobby,

    Thank you very much.
May I know what will happen if I go to 5Mhz.

  • Hey Hari-san,

Are you planing to go to 5MHz using a push pull driver or are you relying on open drain?

Is TCA9406 a possible option for you? I usually recommend this device if you want to use 1MHz or higher.

    Thanks,

    -Bobby
