SN65HVD230: 3.3V and 5V CAN compatibility

Part Number: SN65HVD230

hi friend,

my one customer need one CAN in their E-BIKE project, now their current board haven't 5V power supplier for 5V CAN transceiver , so they want to use 3.3V CAN, such as SN65HVD230, but there are 5V transceiver in their end customer other system device, which are put on in the same CAN bus.

two question as below :

1. 3.3V CAN transceiver and 5V CAN transceiver whether can compatibility in the one can bus, if YES, what is need customer notice when they do that, or whether have any risk for CAN communication.

2. if the first question is non-existent, do you have any suggestion product for 3.3V CAN, because I think SN65HVD230 is a bit old solution.

thanks.

  • Lina,

Thanks for bringing this opportunity to our attention.

    1. If you visit this link, it explains the trade-offs between using 5V and 3.3V transceivers on the same bus.
    2. We have another family of 3.3V CAN transceivers, the TCAN33x family. These are devices developed in a new technology process relative to the SN65HVD23x family of devices.

Please let me know if you have any questions between the TCAN33x and SN65HVD23x devices.

    Regards,
