Our engineering staff will be starting R&D on CANbus technology and interfaces.

We will be working with marine engines and CAN networks, including NMEA2000 protocols and J1939 protocols.

What design kits and evaluation modules do you recommend? What resources can you point to for a good start?

For an evaluation starter, you can check out a standard 8-pin CAN transceiver or a 14-pin CAN transceiver:

TCAN1042 (8-pin): Product Folder and EVM

TCAN1043 (14-pin) Product Folder and EVM

That should get you started on the transceiver side. You will need a protocol controller for either Classical CAN protocol or CAN FD protocol in order to take care of the protocol layer once you are ready for full CAN communication.
