TPS65988: TPS65988 with Port-2 configured only for USB2.0

Part Number: TPS65988

Is there any particular documentation for a TPS65988 implementation to allow for PD on both ports, but "initially" configuring for only USB2.0 on the Port-2 side?  Specifically, in a case where we want to provide VBUS downstream, but operate as upstream facing Device for data?   What should be done to correctly terminate/configure all lines on Port-2 to operate ONLY has USB2.0 initially?   Thank you.

  • Hi Eric,

The TPS65988 does not touch the USB2 line unless you are supporting BC1.2 or the other legacy charging modes. Since the USB2 lines would get connected to the system directly from the Type-C connector the USB connection terminations would be determined by the system.

The only difference would be if you were using an SoC that would read the Data Status register you would would have to do a DR Swap to correct the Data Role if needed.

  • Jacob,

Yes, they do intend to use BC1.2 as well as other Voltage-divider charging modes that TPS65988 detects and supports.   So wanted to understand what to do with the CC lines on TPS65988 Port-2, etc...  and how to configure to be a Charger to that port, but a downstream device for data.   Can that be initially configured that way for Port-2, rather than doing a data-role swap?  (since USB2.0 will be the only possible connection)?

  • Hi Eric,

Are you intending to use the TPS65988 Type-C & PD controller on a Type-A port? If you are connected to a Type-C receptacle always connect CC lines to the connector.

The legacy charging modes are DCP (Dedicate Charging Ports) that do not support data. The charging mode that supports data is CDP (Charging Data Port) which can be configured for the TPS65988. Once CDP detection is complete the USB enumeration takes place.

Our team made an app note that covers TPS65988 BC1.2 Implementation, check below.
