10G-EXPANSION-EVM: what bits come with evm? I got two sources

Part Number: 10G-EXPANSION-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987, TPS65987D

HI I ordered and !0G_expansion evm to do the alternate display mode experiment with the TPS65987 controller.  I understand I need a sink board is that correct?

Will I be able to connect to a monitor with a DVI  connector OK to the SInk board.  Also, I understand not all laptops with USB connectors have video connected- is there a way I can tell in the system if this feature is available on my laptop so I can try the alternate display mode

  • Hi Ajayt,

With the 10G-EXPANSION-EVM Sink board, you can connect a video source (like a laptop) to the Type-C port on the TPS65987EVM using a Type-C to Type-C Cable and then connect the mini-DP port on the expansion EVM to a monitor using a Mini-DP to DP cable. You should download the TPS6598x application customization tool and load a new project. Make sure you select the TPS65987D as the Device and select an advanced UFP project. These settings will work for your setup using the TPS6987EVM and the 10G-EXPANSION-EVM sink board.

    Thank you,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric, followed you instructions, unfortunately nothting displayed on my monitor- attached is board set up.  Do I have to do anything to my Dell laptop to tell it to display through the USB C port?setup.docx

  • Hi Ajayt,

Can you confirm that the SSMX DP Led is on as well? it is not clear from your picture.

You may need to go into your display properties on your laptop and ensure you are set to display on the external monitor.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • HI Eric, Yes I doubled checked that I was selecting to display on the external  monitor.  I have had to disconnect the board for now, what does it mean if the SSMX DP Led is off?   I think we have run out of time though.

    Thanks

    Alan

  • Hi Eric, just checked, the ssmx dp led is on

  • Hi Ajayt,

We have tested this board with our Dell Type-C laptops and a standard DP monitor and saw no issues. I would suggest checking to see if there is anything wrong with your test setup as the configuration on the TPS65987D looks correct.

    Thanks,
    Eric

  • HI Eric, Checked the test set again looks OK-  I have a type C cable, but.........  which one did you use and I'll get the same one, that is the only thing I can think of,-  and of course the customer set does not work either.  I have a monitor with a DP input_ I assume that should be OK- the HDMI port works fine

all the white leds were lit is that what they should be- they only all light up when I connect the USB C cable

  • Hi Alan,

Please ensure you are using the latest version of the TPS6598x Application Customization Tool. When you select a New Project, you just need to select an Advanced UFP project for the TPS65987D. No changes need to be made from that project in order for this to work.

    Thanks,
    Eric

  • Hi, Followed the instructions, still no display- is there any thing I can look at to see where the problem lies?

  • Hi Alan,

It looks like everything is correct from the PD perspective based on the LEDs. Can you try using another Type-C PD video source? It seems like there is no video output coming from the notebook. I don't think the issue lies with the PD controller here.

    Thanks,
    Eric

  • HI Eric, still no luck- can you send me a picture of your set up so I can at least see what you are doing?

  • I tested on our setup 987DDH + DP expansion(Sink) + type C cable + mini DP to DP cable, my laptop can display on the monitor through the setup.

    1. GUI 5.13
    2. Patch 707_10_06
    3. 2 jumpers required on 987 EVM, put J4 at 1&2, put  J5 at 2&3
    4. Open GUI -> New project -> Select TPS65987DDH -> Advanced -> Upstream Facing Port (UFP) Only -> None(DisplayPort Only)
    5. Connect the barrel jack, and FTDI.
    6. Flash the PD and remove the barrel jack
    7. Plug in type C DP source, mini DP sink and Barrel Jack.

Beware of the cable(not too long) and the DP source(Laptop is better), we test on the default configuration from GUI v5.13 template. So the EQ setting is also default for the 10G Expansion board.

    Thanks,

    Oliver

  • HI Oliver, many thanks for your reply, I tried what you said unfortunately no image- I should say though- I am not sure about steps 4 5 6, I can select th software as per 4, then step 5 connect the barrel jack and the FTDI port, but what do you press on the GUI to flash the device.?

  • Alan,

About step 4, Just make sure we have the same project file on the GUI.

Step 5 is to power up the PD controller; FTDI(micro USB) connect GUI and PD controller.

Step 6 is to flash the bin file into the external Flash. PD has to be reset to load the new bin file from the flash.

Would you please test the setup first I mentioned? Don't use any conversion adapter, that may cause more signal lost. Let's stick with DP signal only first. DP source and DP sink will help.

    Thanks,

    Oliver
