TPS65988DJ: OVP trip point and slew rate setting

Part Number: TPS65988DJ
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65988, TPS65987D

Hi team,

My customer would like to consult with you. Is the OVP trip point alway setting at 24V and it couldn't be modify by different PDO?

Can we modify the slew rate by external hardware ? Does the slew rate definition mean the every PDO changing speed or only mean the soft start speed?

And, if the customer use the external power patch for source, does our TPS65988 still have OVP protection function with VBUS pin connecting to one side of power switch?

Ben,

  • Hi Feng,

If you have the Over Voltage Protection Usage field set to "Disconnect VBUS if voltage exceeds OVPTripPoint" then the TPS65987D will always disconnect when the voltage exceeds what you entered in the Over Voltage Protection Trip Point field. If you want to have the TPS65988 determine the OVP trip point based on the negotiated PD contract, then you need to set the Over Voltage Protection Usage field to "Disconnect VBUS if voltage exceeds 5% of expected max". there is also a 10% and 15% option. This will change the OVP Trip point to be set with the VBUS negotiated voltage.

The TPS65988 only does slew rate control when turning on the Power path (from 0V to 5V). If you want to control slew rate from other PD voltages, you would need to do so with another part of your system, the TPS65988 would not do this.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

I have seen the different slew rate option in our gui.

Would you suggest when we could change this slew rate value?

Now, we always choose the  0.41V/ms slew rate default value.

    Thank for your kindly help.

    Ben

  • Hi Ben,

There is no need to change from the default setting of 0.41 V/ms unless there is something special in your system that would require it. For PD compliance, we recommend using the default setting.

    Thank you,
    Eric
