TPS65983B: Question on TPS65983 Thunderbolt Application Customization Tool 4.10

Part Number: TPS65983B

Hi,

I’m using reference design APEX Creek ATX.

1. In Transmit Source Capabilities, there is Bank 0 (manual) setting & Bank 1 (automatic) setting. What is the different between both?

2. For Bank 1 & Bank 0, which will get the 1st priority when power deliver started? Where can I refer to get the sequence flow chart how it work for both bank?

3.  If I only have one power source (i.e. PP_HV) to deliver 5V@3A, 15W, what should be the setting for Transmit Source capability?

Looking forward to your reply.

Thank you.

  • Hello Alice,

Thank you for posting you question here on E2E. An expert covering this part will look into your question and respond shortly.

  • Hi Alice,

it is recommended to use these templates AS IS and to not make any changes. Making changes can result in issues with TBT compliance for your TBT device design. Bank 0 is used for supplying 5V on VBUS, the Bank 1 Source capabilities are selected when dynamic source policy manager is needed which is defined by Intel for TBT device designs. If you will only provide 15W, then bank 0 can be used.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

Thanks for the reply. I still don't understand clearly how Bank 1 & Bank 0 work together. Do you have the flow chart how both work from cable detection until power delivery start?

I doesn't see Bank 1 in the older customization tool (ver3.03)...

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Alice Ng

  • Hi Alice,

Unfortunately, we do not have a flow chart for this behavior. This was done to support Source Policy Manager, a requirement for TBT device designs that will source more than 15W. However, since you plan to only source 15W, this does not apply to your design.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

Just to confirm, the power budget (1.5W) for active cable are no need to include here right?

Since bank 0 is recommended, what do I need to set for bank 1? I notice I not able to disable bank 1. It will be there and change according to the port power capability (the column above Bank 0).

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Alice Ng

  • Hi Alice,

The power budget for VCONN (1.5W), is not included in the Source Capabilities register.

You can leave Bank 1 as the default setting per the TBT design template.

    Thank you,
    Eric
