TPS65987DDJ: TPS65987DDJ dual role port design

Part Number: TPS65987DDJ
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987D, TPS65987

Dear TI,

Currently we are using the TPS65987DDJ on our USB-C port and we are verifying PD function.

We find an issue.

Our system can not charge to the PD power bank which is a DRP device.

I try to set TPS65987DDJ's 0x28 register byte 1 to 0x09 (source state machine selected) via EC I2C bus, it still can not charge to the PD power bank.

I try to send the  ‘SWSr’ – PD PR_Swap to Source via EC I2C bus, it still can not charge to the PD power bank too..

Does TI have any experience on this issue?

May I use the configuration tool to setup PD firmware? if I can, which version has the TPS65987DDJ?

  • Hi Milan,

Do you have a PD trace of this behavior? It is possible that the Power Bank is rejecting the power role swap sent by the TPS65987D. To request access to the TPS65987DDJ Files, please click on the "Request" button on the TPS65987DDJ product page.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Dear Eric,

    Thanks for reply.

I had log the CC as attachments. (We use GRL-USB-PD-A1, please go to GRL web side to download the application)

    1. Asus power bank_x1c 6th.wmc is the successful case.

    2. Asus power bank_A140 firmware.wmc is fail case which log from my board.

Could you help to analyze this?

    I don't know why sink requested a 0mA operating current @59..

I think the communication is good before #46. could we let TPS65987 stop ask sink anything, just stop @46? 5V/1.5A...

or you have other recommendation.. please let me know.. thanks.

  • Hi Milan,

Are you testing with two different Asus power banks? I noticed that the behavior from the power bank seems different in both logs.

For the A140 firmware version, it looks like there is a Hard Reset after the sink sends a Get Source Cap message to the connected Source. The resolution for current on the GRL trace is not very high but it looks like there is a current spike when VBUS gets disconnected. I would make sure to check that there is not an OCP event occurring.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Dear Eric,

no~ I used Asus power bank to test two different systems, both of two systems use the TPS65987DDJ.

Check the test, these does not any OCP event.

I test one system that use the TPS65982DA, it can charge to Asus power bank normally.

Do you know what different between TPS65987DDJ and TPS65982DA?

  • Hi Milan,

There are several differences between the TPS65987D and TPS65982DA. 82DA is PD2.0 only while 87D supports PD3.0.

I would suggest checking the configuration file on the 82DA platform and comparing it to the 87D platform to ensure the behavioral settings are matching.

    Thanks,

    Eric

  • Dear Eric,

    Thanks Eric.

But TPS65982DA is not my company project.. I don't know what configuration it set.

Could you help to to check the TI FW?

    Below is our projects configuration.

  • Hi Milan,

Are you using the TPS6598x Application Customization Tool? I would suggest starting with a DRP Advanced Project that Prefers Data Host. These settings are best oriented for a PC notebook system and should be able to work well in your application.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Dear Eric,

no.. I do not use. Because I only download the TPS65987DDH version..

Where can I download the latest version of TPS65987DDJ FW?

    Thank you~

    Milan Chang.

  • Hi Milan,

If you are using TPS65987DDJ then you need to request access to the secure site by clicking the link under the Special Note section of the product page for TPS65987DDJ. There you can access all the correct files.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Dear Eric,

I requested the support.. but I do not find any way to download the configuration tool.

The requesting was closed and sent "New survey on Customer Service Satisfaction Survey" for me.

Does there have any other way to get the tool and library?

    Thanks.

    Milan.

  • Hi Milan,

The request can take a few days to process. Once the request has gone through you will receive an email with a link to access the files.

    Thank you,
    Eric
