TPS65983B: Flash questions

Part Number: TPS65983B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982

TPS65983B support team,

I have questions related to the Flash.

Do you see any problem with using a different Flash device from recommended?  This is the one the customer wants to use: Macronix MX25V8035FM1I

Where do we get the Flash image?  I assume it's through a Secure Software request, but I don't see a place to request it on the product page.

My understanding from the datasheet is that the device must have a valid image in flash to boot and operate.  Is there any way to avoid having external Flash, like to configure over I2C on boot for example?

Thanks,
Darren

  • Hi Darren,

The TPS65983B is only approved for use with a TBT device reference design developed by Intel. In this case, the SPI Flash is shared with the Intel TBT controller. Intel has a list of approved Flash chips for these reference designs. I would suggest reaching out to them to see if this specific Macronix Flash chip can be supported.

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

Apologies for the delay.  The customer has indicated that this is not a Thunderbolt design.  It is USB Type-C in DP Alt Mode, extending USB 2.0 and DP.  So they didn't plan on contacting Intel about it.  Is there another reference design they should work from?

    Thanks,

    Darren

  • Hi Darren,

If the customer is not following an Intel reference design, they should not be using the TPS65983B. I would suggest promoting the TPS65982 which is pin-to-pin compatible. Here is a list of SPI Flash chips that the 83B and 82 both support:

    AMIC A25L080

    Spansion S25FL208K

    Winbond W25Q80JVNIQ

    Macronix MX25L8006EM1I

    Micron M25PE80-VMN6TP

    Micron M25PX80-VMN6TP

    Thank you,
    Eric

  • Hi Eric,

    Good to know.

How about the Flash contents?  I don't see a file for that on the product page, the design files package or on the EVM page.

    Thanks,

    Darren

  • Hi Darren,

For TPS65983B, you can request access to the files through the Request button on the product page. However, this would only be approved if using an Intel Reference Design. For TPS65982, you can download the TPS6598x Application Customization Tool to generate the Full-Flash image that you can load onto the SPI-Flash.

    Thank you,
    Eric
