DS90UB936-Q1: Cable Length Calculation

Part Number: DS90UB936-Q1

Hi Team,

Is it possible to please provide a specific calculation to determine cable length for a given SERDES pair?

I tried to find this first in the datasheet, but could not find anything specific to calculate max cable length. I also found this app note (http://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla229/snla229.pdf), but Table 1 only provides attenuation allowance at the given frequencies, it does not provide a calculation that can be used for other SERDES pairs.

I also tried looking at Table 6 in the 948 datasheet, which provides a little more insight, but I would like to understand how the Nyquist Frequency relates to the channel attenuation. I think this should be relatively straight forward in a calculation.

Thank you for your support,

Jared

  • Hello Jared,

The way to calculate the allowed cable length is based on the maximum tolerable insertion loss. Actually I just noticed that the details are not included in the 936/954 datasheets (we will make a note to include them), but the 960 datasheet (which has the same channel requirements as 936) contains this information. Please see section 7.4.7.1 of the 960 datasheet.

    Best Regards,

    Casey
