SN75176B: Maximum Data Rate

Part Number: SN75176B
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65176B, , THVD1550

Hi,

The maximum data rate for RS-485 bus is 10Mbps, so could you please tell me the capability of SN65176B for the maximum data rate ?

Best regards,
Kato

  • Hello Kato-san,

The primary limiting factor for the maximum signaling rate of this device would be the transition times of the output.  You would need to make sure that there is enough time for each bit to settle to an appropriate high or low value during the bit period.  For best data integrity, a common rule of thumb is to make sure that the signal transition time is no more than 30% of the bit period.  The bit period at 10 Mbps would be 100 ns, and the maximum output transition time for SN75176B is 30 ns.  This means that the device is generally suitable for 10 Mbps operation (assuming it interfaces with other similar-performing transceivers across suitable cabling).

For new designs, you may want to consider a more modern transceiver like THVD1550.  It is a pin-to-pin equivalent to the older SN75176B but has a number of performance improvements (such as the ESD tolerance, bus operating voltage range, number of nodes supported, etc.).

  • Hi Max-san,

    Thank you for the explanation.

I understood and will suggest the devices like THVD1550 to our customer.

    Best regards,
