TCAN1043-Q1: TCAN1043 supports old CAN 2.0?

Part Number: TCAN1043-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TCAN1043

Hi, my customer is asking that they're using old MCU only support CAN2.0 and if we plugging in CAN-FD device using TCAN1043, it will down to 2.0 and work correctly or can’t to detect device? Per data sheet, it should be able to support all classic CAN and should be ok?

  • Hi Helios,

TCAN1043 implements the physical layer defined by ISO 11898-2; it does not implement a specific higher-layer protocol.  Therefore, it can be used for both CAN FD as well as classical CAN (including CAN 2.0) without issue.  In your case, you would just need to be careful to make sure that the CAN FD controller is configured to operate in a classical CAN mode (no bit rate switching, etc.) so that the reception of FD frames does not trigger error frame generation in the classical CAN nodes.  (The classical CAN protocol is not "forward compatible" to CAN FD.)
