Hi Expert,

Could you tell the advantage and disadvantage for the master mode and slave mode? Customer doesn’t which mode is better for their application. In slave mode, the PHY and MAC share the same reference clock. How to realize this on hardware and software?

    Hi Lenna,

    In RMII master mode, the PHY will accept 25MHz clock and internally create a 50MHz clock from it. This 50MHz clock is available as output of the PHY and can be supplied to the MAC for RMII communication. In RMII Slave mode, the PHY needs a 50MHz clock from external clock source. This clock source can be a oscillator where the output is shared between PHY and MAC. Or the 50MHz clock can be a output from the MAC.
