is there a reason not to use the GPIO to PWM control a display backlight driver on the deserializer side?

Yes, this should work.

Question; what is the frequency of your PWM?

thanks for your answer.

The frequency is at 1kHz and the duty-cycle should be between 0 and 100 percent (in 1% steps).
